Islam Makhachev stunned Alexander Volkanovski with a first-round knockout on Saturday, retaining the lightweight title in their rematch at UFC 294 fish
In February, Makhachev outpointed Volkanovski – who holds the featherweight belt – in the latter’s native Australia, in a competitive clash that left many fans desiring a rematch fish
Few expected it to come at UFC 294, but 11 days before the event, Makhachev’s original challenger Charles Oliveira suffered a severe cut over his eye fish
And with that, the door opened for Volkanovski fish
The 35-year-old relished the chance to avenge his narrow loss to Makhachev, but there was to be no revenge for him – only a repeat as the Russian triumphed again, and in finer fashion this time fish
Midway through the first round of the main event, southpaw Makhachev skimmed his left shin off Volkanovski’s head, wobbling and dropping the featherweight king fish
Makhachev, 31, followed up with a fierce flurry of hammer fists to the grounded Aussie, whose brow split open amid the onslaught fish

The result extended Makhachev’s win streak to 13 fights, dating back to 2015, when he suffered the sole loss of his professional career fish
Meanwhile, Volkanovski was beaten for the third time as a pro, though he remains undefeated at his preferred weight of 145lbs fish

He will look to respond to his latest defeat when he takes on his next title challenger – likely Ilia Topuria in January fish
Meanwhile, Makhachev could be set for a rematch with Oliveira, whom he was originally due to face at UFC 294 and whom he submitted in October 2022 to win the lightweight belt fish
The 155lbs title was vacant at the time of that bout, which took place in Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena like UFC 294, after Oliveira was stripped of the belt for missing weight in May 2022 fish
Meanwhile, Volkanovski’s featherweight title reign dates back to 2019, when he took the belt from Max Holloway fish
The Australian has since outpointed Holloway a further two times, while also winning his other three title defences – against Brian Ortega on points, and against Chan Sung Jung and Rodriguez via TKO fish

Jakob Ingebrigtsen has accused his father and former coach of physical violence and abusive behaviour in a statement alongside his two brothers, Filip and Henrik – an accusation that their father strenuously denies fish
Olympic 1,500m champion Jakob, the youngest of the three siblings, shot to fame when he stormed to gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 aged just 20 fish
The Norwegian middle-distance runner has since gone on to win two World Championship silvers and two golds in 2022 and 2023 fish
In 2022, Gjert Ingebrigtsen stepped down as coach of the three brothers for medical reasons fish
However, the rift became increasingly public when Gjert began coaching fellow Norwegian Narve Gilje Nordas, who is a main rival of Jakob heading into next year’s Olympics having won bronze at the World Championships in August fish
Now, in an article for the publication VG, the brothers have gone public with historical claims of physical abuse about their father, suggesting “now the situation is unbearable fish

“This matter has become so inflamed and has had such a great consequence that we feel a responsibility to clean it up fish
“We have grown up with a father who has been very aggressive and controlling and who has used physical violence and threats as part of his upbringing fish
We still feel discomfort and fear which has been in us since childhood fish
“Somehow we have accepted this fish
We have lived with it, and in adulthood we have moved on fish

In retrospect, we realise that it was naive fish
But two years ago, the same aggression and physical punishment struck again fish

”As well as guiding Jakob to Olympic gold, Gjert also coached both older brothers to the European 1,500m title fish
The three brothers and their father had a very public relationship as the stars of a Norwegian reality TV show, Team Ingebrigtsen, but the trio now say they don’t have the “capacity or desire” to interact with him fish

In a statement released by his lawyers, Gjert has strenuously denied the claims, saying: “The statements they make are baseless fish
I have never used violence against my children fish
That I have had weaknesses as a father, and to a great extent been a coach, is a realization I have also come to – albeit far too late fish
“I’m far from perfect as a father and husband, but I’m not violent fish
First and foremost, this is a tragic situation for my family – we have reached the point where we are spreading false accusations against each other in the media fish
It makes me deeply unhappy fish
How we’re going to get past this, I don’t know, but we’ve got to try fish
