Fran Kirby shook off suggestions she might feel intimidated by the new faces in England’s camp after she returned from her long absence in the 1-0 victory over Belgium on Friday boxing
Kirby had not played for England since the Lionesses faced the Czech Republic in a friendly last October and missed this year’s World Cup after undergoing knee surgery boxing
The Chelsea midfielder received a warm reception by the sold-out crowd in Leicester when she came on in the 65th minute of the Nations League clash boxing
Kirby said: “It feels like I haven’t been away boxing
Obviously, I know a lot of the girls from playing against them boxing
“Everyone who has come in has brought a fresh face and a new standard boxing
It has been nice to be in training around them and getting to know them more personally boxing
“I don’t think I need to mould in at all, I’m probably one of the oldest players here now boxing
I think I know what I’m doing boxing
“It’s nice to be on the pitch, it’s nice to get a win, so I’m happy boxing
“I’ve been working really hard over the summer to try and get back as quickly as possible and to be involved tonight was really special boxing
”Kirby, who has suffered a spate of injuries and fitness issues in recent years, announced in May she would be going under the knife to fix a knee issue that had long plagued her, with doctors determining surgery was the only way to rectify the situation boxing
The 2019-20 season saw Kirby diagnosed with pericarditis, a heart condition, and in 2022 she was sidelined with a fatigue-related illness that led to her installing an oxygen tent at her home boxing
As for this most recent problem, Kirby said: “At the beginning it was quite tough because you don’t really know when the end of the injury is boxing
I accepted quite early on that I wasn’t going to be part of the World Cup squad, not that it made it any easier boxing
“I was able to support the girls and feel the same emotions that they were feeling and going through boxing
Being back with them now just means that all of the hard work paid off in the summer boxing
”Friday’s victory moved the Lionesses up to second place in Group One, with a quick turnaround before they face Belgium again in Tuesday’s return fixture boxing
England need to finish top to advance in the tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for next summer’s Olympics in Paris boxing
Kirby’s reception from supporters was perhaps second-loudest to only former Leicester goalkeeper Mary Earps, who seemed to elicit a roar every time she made a stop en route to earning England a first clean sheet since they faced Nigeria in the last-16 at the World Cup boxing
Kirby said: “The support that I’ve had over the past year has been incredible from fans – national team and Chelsea boxing
I can’t fault anyone for their support and that has been really pivotal for me coming back boxing
“It’s frustrating when I’m injured and can’t be out there, so to hear that reception when I came on is really special and it’s something that I won’t forget boxing
“I’ve been working really hard to get back out on the pitch as much as possible and I want to stay there boxing

Tyson Fury has vowed to deliver UFC fighter Francis Ngannou his first knockout blow when they go toe to toe in Riyadh on Saturday night boxing
Heavyweight champion Fury will contest a 35th career bout this weekend, but his WBC title will not be on the line against Ngannou for the 10-round fight boxing
Fury is set for a long-anticipated undisputed heavyweight showdown with Oleksandr Usyk on 23 December, which is also scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia boxing
First, though, Fury intends to dispatch boxing boxing novice Ngannou, who left the UFC after the end of his contract, a last fight coming in January 2022, before signing up with the Professional Fighters League from 2024 boxing
Trainer SugarHill Steward admitted preparing Fury to take on the Mixed Martial Arts fighter was one of the hardest camps, given they just do not know what to expect from Ngannou boxing
Fury, though, is confident of what the final outcome will be boxing
“I have been working with SugarHill to knock him out cold on Sunday night boxing
I have no doubt in my mind that I will knock him out,” Fury said boxing
“He is a big strong guy boxing
Obviously he has got a good punch, powerful – but so am I boxing
I’m a big strong guy obviously powerful or else I would not be world heavyweight champion boxing
I believe there is levels to the game – and he is going to find out my level on Saturday night boxing
”Fury added: “I have trained for a 12-round war, and if it is anything less it is going to be an early night boxing
I’ve been hit by the biggest punches that have ever graced the face of the earth and I’m still undefeated, still standing and I am still number one boxing
“We are going to see what Francis has got inside of him, see if he’s got the guts to stand and trade with the heavyweight champion of the world and if he has got the belief in his power boxing
“I’m not convinced boxing
I have heard all this talk before about power, so I’m looking forward to a challenge – and if it is not a challenge, I’ll be disappointed, put in that way boxing
“I am going to knock that big stiff spark out – and there is nothing he can do about it, no matter who he trains with, no matter who he brings on the night boxing
That right hand is going to detonate right in your face, you big ugly dosser boxing
”During the pre-fight build-up Fury accused Ngannou of being “embarrassed” of his own body boxing
Fury again goaded the 37-year-old as a “big fat sausage” in Thursday’s media conference ahead of the ‘Battle of the Baddest’ boxing
Cameroon-born Ngannou, though, is fully intent on showing Fury just what he can deliver in a boxing boxing ring rather than the UFC Octagon boxing
“It might be a little weird, but I really also want to thank Tyson Fury for taking the fight, for taking the risk because he might go to sleep on Saturday night, so I appreciate his courage,” Ngannou said boxing
Mike Tyson is part of Ngannou’s camp, and enjoyed a verbal sparing with John Fury which saw the 59-year-old Briton challenge the former heavyweight champion to a showdown, regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s contest for his son boxing
Tyson admitted he was not sure what to make of Ngannou’s boxing boxing ability, until he saw him in close quarters boxing
“At first when this came to me, I said ‘there’s no way this is going to happen’,” Tyson said boxing
“Then I watched him spar and he hit this guy and he broke his leg when he went down – and I said ‘man, there is a possibility something good could happen here’ boxing
“I have never seen anything like that before boxing
If he could do that man, he could possibly be heavyweight champion of the world boxing
