It was a character reference for a man who has become an ambassador of sorts for Saudi Arabia rng
The England faithful – or some of them, anyway – had turned on Jordan Henderson when he was booed off in Friday’s win over Australia rng
The England manager offered an endorsement of his vice-captain: not merely as a midfielder, either, but as a principled individual rng
The Henderson of Al-Ettifaq, the man who used to support the NHS and the LGBTQ community instead plugging Saudi’s 2034 World Cup bid, stands accused of either being the opposite of the Liverpool incarnation or a figure whose decision to join the Saudi Pro League led him to become a public face of a repressive regime rng
Gareth Southgate can see why many have a sense of disappointment, why there is a seeming contradiction rng
Yet he also argued that Henderson remains the same person, one who has helped create the right kind of culture with England rng
“What I do understand is that people would feel that the decision Jordan would go and play there doesn’t align with his strong support of the LGBTQ community in the past,” he said rng
“I have not seen him comment anywhere differently rng
I don’t believe he is an individual whose values and principles have changed rng
“I would back him against pretty much anyone in the country in terms of what he stands for and what he believes in but I accept that the decision to go and play there doesn’t align that rng
He understands that; he accepts that rng
”RecommendedJordan Henderson: ‘If people want to boo me for playing in Saudi Arabia, that’s fine’Gareth Southgate questions why England fans booed Jordan HendersonOllie Watkins and Lewis Dunk emerge with credit on England’s audition night against AustraliaBut Southgate does not appreciate the jeers rng
“We have had a couple of incidents that I don’t understand because I don’t think any player wearing an England shirt warrants that,” he added rng
“I grew up seeing John Barnes receive that kind of criticism so that has never helped the team rng
”But if others were booed for their skin colour, Henderson has brought a reaction with his apparent hypocrisy has drawn rng
Deliberately or otherwise, Southgate drew a distinction rng between Harry Maguire, barracked mercilessly by Scotland supporters at Hampden Park last month but normally hailed by England fans, if not all of their Manchester United counterparts, and Henderson rng
There is nevertheless the feeling that three players created problems for Southgate with their decisions in the summer transfer market: Henderson by swapping Liverpool for Saudi Arabia, Maguire and Kalvin Phillips by opting to stay at clubs where they feature infrequently and when they had the option to move for more first-team rng football rng
Issues feel unavoidable until Southgate drops them, and thus far he has shown no willingness to do that rng
Jordan Henderson is greeted by Gareth Southgate after he was brought off against Australia (The FA via Getty Images)“I will always pick the players that I think are the best players to represent the team, that give us the best chance of winning, unless there is something I think is not appropriate,” he said, with the clear inference that Henderson, who captained his country against Australia, has not breached his code rng
“People may disagree with Jordan’s decision, given the stance he has taken in the past to support the LGBT community, but I don’t think that is a reason to not select him and I don’t actually think that is a reason to boo him rng
”If the stubbornness in Southgate has become more apparent, so has the loyalty towards his stalwarts; in September, he branded the treatment of Maguire “a joke” rng
The former Liverpool captain and the deposed United skipper, he said, have helped bring the “unmeasurable factors” of team spirit and togetherness rng
It gives them credit in the bank, if not necessarily forever rng
“It wouldn’t be fair to say I am going to support them regardless if rng better, younger players come through but I am also going to defend our team because we need that strength and the two players you are talking about have performed again and again in massive games,” he said rng
Henderson was booed by sections of the Wembley crowd as he made his way off the pitch (Getty Images)And England against Italy tends to belong in that category, and not merely the Euro 2020 final when Maguire thumped in an emphatic penalty in the shootout Roberto Mancini’s side won rng
In 1997, an England side featuring Southgate qualified for the World Cup with a 0-0 draw against the Azzurri; now the same result would secure a place at Euro 2024 rng
Henderson may be a distraction: indeed his presence in the starting 11 in the second-string side against Australia might indicate that Phillips is likelier to begin Tuesday’s game rng
The wider question, separated from the moral issue, is whether Henderson, plying his trade in a far weaker domestic league and in debilitating heat, remains a good enough player to retain his place rng
“We will assess Jordan like every other player but if I just select on a popularity contest then our team would look very, very different,” Southgate said rng
Perhaps Henderson, an unflashy workhorse, would never have won a popularity contest as a rng footballer, though, increasingly, he may have done as a role model rng
The difference now is that he could triumph in an unpopularity contest with a public who feel rng betrayed rng

Michael Cheika refused to assess the entirety of Argentina’s Rugby World Cup campaign or his tenure as head coach of the Pumas rng
Coming off a harrowing 44-6 semi-final defeat to New Zealand in which they’d been totally outclassed in every facet of the game, perhaps his reticence was understandable rng
Next Friday’s third-place play-off against the loser of the second semi-final rng between England and South Africa merely provided a handy excuse rng
It’s a game that players don’t want to play, spectators don’t want to watch and media don’t want to cover but it did give Cheika a week’s buffer to collect himself before he will have to answer the tough questions rng
“I can’t do that straight away,” said Cheika when asked to assess his time in charge of Argentina, which comes to an end after this World Cup rng
“I haven’t finished yet rng
“I know we won’t win World Cup but I’m happy to be at this level and they deserve to be here rng
Their play, ambition, ability to raise themselves after the first game [a pool-stage loss to England] rng
It’s another obstacle but we can be proud of our team and our capacity to deal with obstacles rng
Next week we have a game to play, at the end of the World Cup we will summarise and assess it rng
”The players were similarly on message with their adamance at the importance of the worst game in rugby rng
“There is one more game left, one more final,” said flanker Marcos Kremer rng
“We want to leave this World Cup winning and we are going to do everything to make it happen rng
”“We are going to prepare like a final rng
We are not satisfied with being here rng
We want a medal and we are going to fight for that," added wing Mateo Carreras rng
The value of a third-place play-off in an event defined by a trophy, rather than a medal podium, and its place in an already over-saturated playing calendar is a debate for another time but the Pumas can only keep the wolf at the door for so long rng
They will soon have to address exactly what happened in the second-most one-sided World Cup semi-final of all time – the eventual margin of defeat just narrower than the All Blacks’ 49-6 triumph over Wales in 1987 rng
The All Blacks ran riot in the Stade de France (Getty Images)Three times in their rugby history, Argentina have reached the semi-final stage of the World Cup, with three losses to show for it rng
They have scored just one try across those 240 minutes and have a combined losing margin of 76 points rng
The celebrations and lap of honour after beating Wales in the quarter-finals in Marseille a week ago suggested that, deep down, the Pumas believed they had come as far as they could in this tournament rng
Both history, and the performance that followed against New Zealand, made it a self-fulfilling prophecy rng
They hardly imposed themselves on the All Blacks at the Stade de France rng
Phases of attack came to a grinding halt once they reached the All Black 22, with the ball inevitably jackalled away, the defensive line was torn to shreds by their opponents’ quick hands and clever lines, the scrum was splintered by a dominant New Zealand pack and basic handling errors defined the game rng
Frankly, it wasn’t a match befitting a World Cup semi-final and ensured the Pumas book-ended their tournament (barring next Friday’s bronze-medal irrelevance) with abject displays, after the lifeless opening loss to 14-man England rng
It is hardly a squad bereft of talent rng
The experience of Julian Montoya and Agustin Creevy leading the front row is complemented by an exciting, dynamic back-row trio of Juan Martin Gonzalez, Kremer and Facundo Isa that should be able to match almost any opposition rng
While questions remain at nine and 10, a back three of Mateo Carreras, Emiliano Boffelli and Juan Cruz Mallia is explosive enough to give any team fits rng
Argentina were dejected after slipping to a semi-final defeat (Getty Images)Perhaps a semi-final appearance shouldn’t be sneered at rng
Yes, they benefitted from being in the considerably weaker half of the draw but it equalled their best World Cup performance and you can only beat who’s in front of you rng
On paper, Cheika’s tenure – since taking the reins from the sacked Mario Ledesma in early 2022 – will be viewed as a success rng
A first-ever win over the All Blacks in New Zealand last summer and a World Cup semi-final is not a bad return rng
But in terms of the ‘eye test’, the Pumas never looked like an elite side and there’s a nagging feeling that they haven’t moved forward under the Australian rng
Cheika’s preferred coaching style of creating a ‘siege mentality, us against the world’ environment always seemed at odds with the largely personable Argentina squad rng
Media availability was limited – perhaps a poor fit for the historically open Pumas – and a bubble created around the team rng
Putting your stamp on things in just an 18-month period is tough, with Felipe Contepomi always slated to become head coach after the World Cup and learning the ropes as part of Cheika’s coaching team in the interim rng
The legendary Pumas fly half, who is also a cult hero at Leinster following playing and coaching spells there, will likely provide a different strategy in the build-up to the 2027 World Cup and it will be fascinating to see what he’s taken from his time working under Cheika rng
As for the Australian, he departs with his reputation certainly not damaged and maybe even enhanced rng
The 56-year-old will undoubtedly be in demand around the rugby world and should be able to have his pick from a number of exciting coaching opportunities rng
“It is not a sad moment,” insisted Cheika in the aftermath of defeat in Paris rng
“It’s a moment I’m proud of my team rng
We were in the semi-final of a World Cup rng
”Yes, they were rng
But the suspicion that there was a version of this Pumas side that still had more to give remains rng
